Get fluent on the iPad + Procreate

Goal: walk away comfortable and confident inside Procreate and your new iPad workflow — before we render a single diamond.

Setting Up Your iPad + Apple Pencil for Design Work

Before you draw a single line, a few setup choices will save you weeks of low-grade frustration. Here's what actually matters for jewelry rendering specifically — fine, controlled, high-precision mark-making.

Palm-rejection zone Apple Pencil

Rest your hand naturally inside the palm-rejection zone — Procreate ignores it as long as the Pencil tip stays active.

  1. Pair and charge your Apple Pencil. Snap it to the magnetic edge of your iPad (2nd-gen Pencil) or plug it in (1st-gen) until you see the pairing card. Charge it fully before your first session — a dying Pencil starts skipping strokes, which will read as a Procreate bug when it isn't.
  2. Turn on Palm Rejection — it's automatic, but know it exists. Procreate ignores touches from the side of your hand resting on the screen as long as the Pencil tip is also active. Rest your hand naturally, the way you'd rest it on a drafting table. If you find your palm accidentally drawing or dragging the canvas, check that your Pencil tip isn't worn down (see step 4) or that you're not hovering the Pencil too far from the glass.
  3. Set your Pencil's double-tap gesture. Go to Settings → Apple Pencil → Double-Tap. Set it to "Switch Between Current & Last Tool" — for jewelry work you'll be flicking constantly between a fine liner and an eraser, and this single gesture removes hundreds of trips to the toolbar per session.
  4. Check pressure sensitivity in Procreate itself. Open any brush, tap the brush icon again to edit it, go to Apple Pencil settings inside the brush, and confirm Pressure is mapped to Opacity and/or Size (most default brushes already do this). This is what gives you the CorelDraw-Pressure-Pen-equivalent: a thin, light line when you touch down softly, a bold confident one when you press.
  5. Consider a matte screen protector or "paper-like" film. Glass is slippery under a Pencil nib; a textured film adds tooth that mimics drawing on paper and dramatically improves control for fine facet lines. It's optional, but most jewelry illustrators who render a lot of tiny linework use one.
  6. Watch your nib wear. Pencil tips wear down with the fine, repetitive strokes jewelry rendering demands faster than they will for looser sketching. If lines start feeling "slippery" or Palm Rejection gets flaky, swap the nib — packs are inexpensive and it's a 10-second twist-off swap.
  7. If your iPad supports Apple Pencil hover (Pencil 2 generation on iPad Pro / iPad Air with M2 or later, paired with a compatible Pencil), you'll see a small preview circle showing brush size and rotation before you touch down — useful for lining up a facet cut precisely before committing.
Coming from CorelDraw: think of the Apple Pencil as your pressure-sensitive graphics tablet pen, except now the "tablet" is the screen itself — you're drawing directly on the image instead of looking up at a monitor. The adjustment is mostly proprioceptive (your hand relearns hand-eye alignment on a slightly reflective glass surface); it typically takes a few sessions to stop overshooting strokes.
Practice: Open a blank Procreate canvas and spend five minutes just making pressure-varied lines — thin, thick, tapered in and out — until a stroke feels predictable under your hand.

The Procreate Interface Tour

Procreate's interface is deliberately minimal compared to CorelDraw's dockable-everything layout. Almost everything lives in one of four places. Here's the map:

Everything in Procreate collapses into five icons top-right (Gallery, wrench-Actions, Adjustments-wand, Selection, Transform) and five along the top-left toolbar (Brush, Smudge, Eraser, Layers, Color). Two side sliders control brush size (top) and opacity (bottom). That's the entire toolset — deliberately smaller than CorelDraw's docked panels, because most functions live inside the Brush and Layers panels rather than as separate dockable tools.

The five top-right icons

  • Gallery (arrow, top-left corner) — returns you to your list of canvases, Procreate's equivalent of "File → Open."
  • Actions (wrench) — your import/export, canvas settings, video time-lapse, and app preferences live here. Equivalent to CorelDraw's File and Document menus combined.
  • Adjustments (magic wand) — Gaussian Blur, Hue/Saturation, Curves, Liquify, and other filters that in CorelDraw would sit under Effects/Bitmaps.
  • Selection (S-in-a-box) — rectangle, ellipse, freehand, and automatic (color-based) selection, plus the Symmetry-relevant "flip/duplicate selection" tools.
  • Transform (arrow icon) — Procreate's Free Transform, Uniform, Distort, and Warp — your equivalent of CorelDraw's Pick tool handles, but gesture-driven.

The bottom-left toolbar

  • Brush — opens your brush library. Tap once to select, tap the selected brush again to edit it.
  • Smudge — pushes existing pixels around using any brush shape; this is your primary metal-blending tool in Level 2.
  • Eraser — uses the currently selected brush's shape, so a textured brush erases with texture too.
  • Layers — opens the Layers panel (stack, blend modes, opacity, Alpha Lock, Clipping Mask — all covered in 1.5).
  • Color — the color wheel/palette picker. You can also drag color directly from this circle onto the canvas to fill an area.
Coming from CorelDraw: there's no persistent Property Bar — brush settings live inside the Brush Studio itself (double-tap a brush), and there are no dockable toolbars you can rearrange. Procreate trades customizable chrome for a distraction-free canvas; the tradeoff is that a few settings live one tap deeper than you're used to.
Practice: Open a new canvas and tap through all five top-right icons and all five bottom-left tools once each, just to build the spatial map in your hand before you need it mid-drawing.

Canvas Setup for Jewelry Work

Canvas settings determine your maximum layer count, export sharpness, and whether a piece will hold up printed at catalog size. Set these deliberately per project rather than always grabbing Procreate's default "Screen Size" canvas.

On color profile: Procreate works natively in RGB. It doesn't do true CMYK separations the way CorelDraw does — if a piece is heading to offset print, export a high-res RGB file and let your print vendor or a layout app handle CMYK conversion, or soft-proof mentally by keeping colors slightly less saturated than they look on the bright iPad display, since screens read more vivid than ink.

Orientation: for a single ring or earring study, a square canvas keeps you from wasting time on canvas real estate. For multi-view presentation boards (Level 3–4), set up a landscape canvas sized to your final page so you're not fighting proportions during layout later.

Layer budget warning: Procreate's maximum layer count depends on canvas resolution — the larger the canvas, the fewer layers it allows (shown live under Canvas → Canvas Info as you resize). Jewelry rendering is layer-hungry (separate layers per facet pass, per highlight, per metal tone), so don't oversize a canvas "just in case" — pick the smallest size that meets your actual output need.

Why this matters: undersizing means a blurry client PDF; oversizing silently caps you at 8–15 layers mid-piece, right when you need one more highlight layer. Matching canvas size to actual output avoids both failure modes.
Practice: Create three canvases now — one 2048×2048 for sketching, one 3000×3000 at 300 DPI for presentation work, and save both as custom presets (the "+" next to canvas size lets you name and reuse a preset).

Essential Gestures Cheat-Sheet

Procreate replaces most keyboard shortcuts with touch gestures. These become automatic fast — but knowing them now saves you from hunting through menus for things you'd normally hit Ctrl+Z for. Each card below shows the finger-count at a glance.

Two-finger tap = Undo. Three-finger tap = Redo. Hold two fingers down to rapid-undo.

Why this matters: jewelry rendering leans hard on QuickShape (perfect circles for stones/bands) and Symmetry (see 1.6) — both are gesture-triggered, not menu items, so building this muscle memory now pays off in every lesson after this one.
Practice: On a blank canvas, draw ten QuickShape circles of different sizes and ten QuickLine straight lines until the "draw then hold" rhythm feels automatic.

Layers, Modes, Alpha Lock & Clipping Masks

You already know what a layer is conceptually. What's worth learning here is Procreate's specific mechanics — three of them will become your daily jewelry-shading tools.

A typical shading stack: base shape (Alpha Locked) → freehand shading pass → a Clipping Mask layer for the highlight, kept separately editable.

Alpha Lock

Swipe right on a layer (or tap it → Alpha Lock) to lock its transparency. Once locked, you can only paint inside pixels that already exist on that layer — anything you paint outside the existing shape is discarded. This is how you shade a gold band without ever going outside its silhouette: draw the flat band shape once, Alpha Lock the layer, then paint highlights and shadows freely with zero risk of spilling outside the edges.

Clipping Mask

Tap a layer → Clipping Mask to make it "clip" to the layer directly beneath it — it only shows where the layer below has pixels, and it stays as a separate layer (unlike Alpha Lock, which affects one single layer). Use Clipping Masks when you want to keep a shading pass editable and separately erasable from your base shape — for example, a facet-sparkle highlight layer clipped above your diamond base, which you can nudge, erase, or delete without touching the diamond shape itself.

Blend Modes

Tap "N" next to a layer's opacity to open blend modes — Multiply (darkens, great for core shadows and cast shadows), Screen/Add (brightens, great for hot highlights and sparkle), Overlay (adds contrast/saturation, great for a final color-punch pass on a gemstone).

Groups

Select multiple layers (swipe each with two fingers, or tap Select and multi-select), then tap Group. Groups behave like CorelDraw object groups — move, transform, or hide the whole set at once. Nest a "Ring Band" group and a "Center Stone" group so your layer stack stays navigable as a piece grows to 20+ layers.

Coming from CorelDraw: Alpha Lock is the closest thing Procreate has to "Lock Object" combined with a clipping boundary — but it's raster, so there's no editable underlying vector shape once you've committed. Keep an un-Alpha-Locked duplicate of key base shapes if you think you'll need to resize later.
Practice: Draw a solid-color circle on its own layer. Alpha Lock it and paint three shading tones (dark/mid/light) freehand without worrying about going outside the edge. Then add a new Clipping Mask layer above it and add a small white highlight dot.

Selection Tools & the Symmetry Drawing Guide

Selections work much like CorelDraw's marquee and freehand selection — rectangle, ellipse, freehand (lasso), and an "Automatic" mode that selects by color/contrast similarity, useful for isolating a single facet or gem region to recolor.

The tool that will change your workflow completely, though, is Symmetry Drawing Guide — and it exists almost as if Procreate had jewelry designers specifically in mind.

Match the symmetry axis to the piece — draw once, Procreate mirrors the rest live.

  1. Open Actions (wrench) → Canvas → Drawing Guide, toggle it on, then tap Edit Drawing Guide.
  2. Choose Symmetry from the guide type options along the bottom.
  3. Pick your symmetry type:
    • Vertical — mirrors left/right across a center line. Perfect for a pendant, a single earring, or a front-facing brooch.
    • Horizontal — mirrors top/bottom.
    • Quadrant — mirrors across four quadrants at once, useful for symmetric motif/filigree work.
    • Radial — mirrors around a center point across a number of segments you set (e.g. 8, 12, 16) — this is your ring-band and mandala-halo tool. Set the segment count to match the repeating unit you're drawing (say, 8 prongs around a bezel).
  4. Turn on Assisted Drawing (toggle appears once a brush is active with the guide on) so strokes actually snap and mirror live, rather than just showing a faint guide line.
  5. Draw on one side/segment — Procreate mirrors your strokes to every other segment in real time.
Why this matters: jewelry is disproportionately symmetric — ring bands (radial), earring pairs and pendants (vertical), pavé halos (radial). Drawing one segment and letting Procreate mirror it isn't a shortcut that cuts corners — it's how you guarantee the kind of mechanical precision a jeweler's eye expects, precision that's hard to hand-match stroke-for-stroke otherwise.
Coming from CorelDraw: this replaces the workflow of drawing one shape, then Duplicate + Mirror Transform + nudge into place repeatedly. Symmetry Drawing Guide does that live, at draw-time, instead of as a post-hoc transform step.
Practice: Turn on Radial symmetry with 8 segments and draw a simple prong shape in one segment — watch it appear in all 8 instantly. Then switch to Vertical symmetry and sketch half of a pendant outline.

Brush Studio Basics

A Procreate brush is more than a tip shape — it's a bundle of settings: a Stroke Path (how marks are spaced/jittered along your gesture), a Shape source (the stamp shape), a Grain source (a texture applied within the shape), and behavior curves for how Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, and velocity affect size, opacity, and blending.

You don't need to master brush engineering yet — just know the map so later lessons (where we build custom metal-grain and facet-sparkle brushes) make sense:

Stroke Path Shape Grain → texture painted through the Shape

A brush = Stroke Path (spacing/jitter) + Shape (stamp outline) + Grain (texture) + Apple Pencil pressure/tilt curves.

  • Double-tap any brush in the library to open Brush Studio and see all of this.
  • Stroke Path controls spacing/jitter/falloff — this is what makes a brush feel "smooth and continuous" versus "dotted/textured."
  • Shape and Grain are the two visual DNA sources of a brush — Shape is the stamp outline, Grain is the texture painted through it. Swapping Grain alone can turn a smooth airbrush into a grainy metal-texture brush.
  • Apple Pencil settings (inside Brush Studio) map Pressure → Opacity/Size and Tilt → Size/Shading — this is where you'd, say, make a brush get wider and softer the more you tilt the Pencil, mimicking a chisel-tip marker.

Brush library organization

Procreate ships with default sets (Sketching, Inking, Painting, Airbrushing, etc.). Create your own set early: tap "+" at the top of the Brush Library and name it Jewelry Kit. As you progress through Level 2, you'll duplicate and modify default brushes (typically starting from a soft Airbrush for metal blending and a hard-edged brush for facet linework) into this set, so your whole custom toolkit lives in one place instead of scattered across default categories.

Why this matters: jewelry rendering leans on maybe 4–6 brushes used constantly (a fine liner, a soft round for blending, a hard airbrush for metal gradients, a small textured brush for facet sparkle and pavé grain). Knowing how to find/duplicate/organize them now means Level 2's brush-building lessons are quick edits, not a scavenger hunt.
Practice: Create a brush set called "Jewelry Kit." Duplicate one soft round brush and one hard inking brush into it — you'll build on these directly in Level 2.

Mini Practice Project: Five Jewelry Silhouettes

Time to combine everything from this level into one short session. Using only QuickShape and the Symmetry Drawing Guide, draw five basic jewelry silhouettes as clean flat shapes (no shading yet — that's all of Level 2):

Hoop earring
Pendant outline

  1. Ring band — a thin torus/ring shape using QuickShape (draw an ellipse, then a smaller concentric ellipse and subtract, or draw the band as a thick-stroked circle outline).
  2. Stud earring — a small circle (the stone) sitting on a tiny prong base — use Vertical symmetry so you draw only half the prong setting.
  3. Hoop earring — an open circular band using QuickShape's ellipse-then-hold, adjusted to an open C-shape.
  4. Pendant outline — a teardrop or bezel silhouette using Vertical symmetry for a perfectly even shape.
  5. Chain link — two interlocking rounded-rectangle QuickShapes, useful groundwork for Level 3's chain lesson.
Practice: Put all five on one canvas, one per layer, named clearly (Ring Band, Stud, Hoop, Pendant, Chain Link). You'll reuse this exact file's layer organization habit throughout the course.
